Your Photo Management Questions answered
Why storing photos in Facebook albums is not a good idea
I quite often hear that people store or backup their digital photos to Facebook albums. There are two main issues with that and I explain it in detail in my response to this advise people share:
- We don’t own Facebook. They can close shop tomorrow and we can’t do a thing about it. Plus even the strictest privacy settings are not 100 % save.
- More importantly, the quality loss and the stripping of metadata is massive.
Facebook is simply not the place to store or backup photos if you care for your photos. It can be a great tool to share them though, I use it, too.
What other cloud storage options are there instead?
Start listening at about 6 minutes in.
There are definitely better cloud storage options than Facebook. My first choice would be Forever (affiliate). However, Dropbox, OneDrive, AmazonDrive and even Google Drive are much better options than Facebook as well. In any case, my recommendation is always to keep your photo hub on your computer or external hard drive and only use the cloud to share and to backup. I really feel strongly that we should be in the driver seat when it comes to our precious photos. What solution is ideal for you will depend on your Why (check out our podcast episode #003 to learn more about this topic)
Scanning your printed photos
Starting at 8:30 minutes in.
I am sharing my latest service, which is a completely self-paced short online course about how to sort and scan physical photos. You can find more details here.
Furthermore, I share some information about phone camera scanning. It has become very popular but to be honest, I’m not a big fan, and I explain why in the video. As with everything, it does have it’s place in certain situations but generally speaking, if you want to scan a precious photo collection, a scan done with your phone – even with the most sophisticated app – will just not be good enough in my view.
Current specials on my Facebook feed
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, a lot of services and vendors are currently running specials. Photo management and creation of photo books and gifts is one of those things that a lot of people have started to tackle while safely staying at home. Because I get almost daily emails with some sort of specials from vendors, I thought I’d share them in a Facebook post that will regularly be updated and is pinned to the top of my feed. Check it out here.
